Extrinsic Loss

Loss that is induced in an optical Transmission System by an external source. In a fiber-optic link, this can be caused by improper alignment of connectors or splices.

Extrinsic Loss may be caused by Macrobending or microbending.

Macrobending – Light lost from the optical Core due to macroscopic effects such as bending and crushing. For instance, the poor handling of a Fiber or a tight Bend Radius installation may result in macrobending.

Microbending – Light lost from the optical core due to microscopic effects resulting from deformation and damage to the core in manufacturing.
