Optical Fiber
A thin filament of drawn or extruded Glass or plastic having a central Core and a Cladding of lower index material to promote internal reflection. It may be used singly to transmit pulsed optical signals (communications fiber) or in bundles to transmit Light or images.
Listed below are common specifications for optical Fiber and its geometry, core diameter, cladding diameter, aspect ratio, and aperature.
Optical fiber is fiber Cable made of thin strands of glass over which data/light signals can be transmitted.
Optical fiber is made of a core, the thin glass center where Data is transmitted, the cladding, the material surrounding the core that traps the light signal in the core, and the Buffer coating, which is a protective Coating applied onto the fiber.
Optical fiber has many advantages over other kinds of cable used for data transmission. These advantages include:
- Lighter weight
- Smaller diameter
- Higher bandwidth
- EMI and RFI resistant
- Better suited for data transmission
- Non-flammable
- Use less power
- Less signal degradation
