Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers are a type of Semiconductor Laser Diode that emits its coherent Energy vertically.

VCSELs are unlike edge-emitting diodes in that they are less expensive to manufacture, are easy to test and are more efficient.

VCSELs use less energy and are able to emit a narrow, more circular bean than edge-emitting diodes and therefore energy is more efficiently passed from the device into a fiber. Data is also able to be transferred at higher speeds than with edge-emitting diodes.

The acronym VCSELs is pronounced “vixel.”
